<image:title>Things</image:title>
<image:caption>Thing Ten, 2023; Things reflects my ongoing fascination with the 17th-century Cabinet of Curiosity—early collections where science, art, and mystery came together in unpredictable ways. Like those cabinets, my work gathers objects into new constellations, where meaning emerges through arrangement, intuition, and material presence. Each image begins with a physical process: I place everyday items on a sheet of glass, light them from above, and photograph them from below, lying on the studio floor. This reversed perspective transforms simple materials—chicken bones, onion skins, feathers—into sculptural, almost alchemical forms. Some objects come from personal collections, some are found by chance, and others are gifts. Each carries a trace of lived time. Influenced by philosopher Byung-Chul Han’s Non-things, this series responds to the growing disappearance of tangible objects in our digital age. Where today’s world is often dominated by data and disembodied images, Things reclaims the physical: textures, weight, fragility, and decay. These are not just still lifes—they are meditations on material presence. Often, a composition begins with a single object—a dead young rat found on the street, for instance—around which others are arranged ritually, like items washed together after a flood. Guided by the fragmented logic of curiosity cabinets, I combine natural and man-made elements, old and new, precious and discarded. Whether translucent or opaque, each object contributes to the creation of another form—something in between sculpture, photograph, and momento mori. Something that asks to be looked at slowly. Something that insists on being a thing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sea of Troubles</image:title>
<image:caption>Camellia sinensis var. sinensis III (Collage), 2024 // Sea of Troubles series "Sea of Troubles" is a series of photographs, developed during my year-long residency at the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford, drawing inspiration from the 17th century—a period defined by civil wars, colonial expansion, and the rise of tea as a cultural and social phenomenon in England. My research into magical thinking in relation to Wunderkammer collections from the early modern period led me to explore tasseography, or tea leaf reading, a practice that flourished when tea was introduced from China to Europe. Reimagining tea as a symbol of novelty and exclusivity, I was intrigued by the idea of tea readings amidst the turbulent backdrop of 17th century England—a time when the Tradescants were curating their botanical collections for England’s first public museum, the Ark, which later became the Ashmolean’s founding collection. The photographs were created through a slow process of ironing, painting and arranging teabags on sheets of glass, allowing light to filter through creased fabric and scattered tea leaves. The result is a series of abstract, shadowed landscapes where light struggles to break through. These images were then printed on delicate rice paper, which I manually creased and crinkled, adding a sculptural quality to the work. "Sea of Troubles" is an ongoing exploration of tea’s complex history and its colonial associations, reimagined through the lens of the Tradescants' botanical collections. Using teabags as a medium, each image becomes a miniature landscape of turmoil—winds howl, floods rage, and horizons darken, evoking the unsettled spirit of the era. This work reflects both the rituals of the past and the unconscious drives of the creative process, bridging the analog and digital worlds while connecting the everyday object to its broader historical context.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"...Made Up Love Song is set quite consciously by the artist at the centre of a number of intersecting histories. In her chosen style and means of production, and in the delicate paring down of information in the images that might disclose a sense of time and place, Von Zwehl has created a photographic form that appears to exist outside time. And here, in this indeterminate portrait space, the jewelled miniature’s associations with the aristocracy and with the private economies of a social elite are intertwined with photography’s nineteenth century role in quasi-scientific modes of anthropological study . The pictures of Sophia cast an arc over these social connections, one than takes in the colonial past as well as the post-colonial present, and enfolds the V&A, too, both its Victorian heritage and the current institution, in a complex narrative that makes us think about about race, representation and power. Von Zwehl’s strategy over her thirty-four-image work is to conflate and amplify these echoes, but also to scramble them, to reform that history into a powerful contemporary statement". From the V&A publication: Made up Love Song, 2011 - extract from the introduction essay by David Chandler.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"It has been argued that the invention of photography killed the portrait miniature. Many miniaturists were forced to replace their fine brushes and pieces of ivory with a camera, backdrop and head-stand so as to keep their clientele. However, as Bettina von Zwehl's work so aptly demonstrates, photography did not kill miniature art. Portraiture's essence - its watchfulness and its concern - lives on, and continues to draw us in..." - Dr Hanneke Grootenboer, extract from the essay 'Private View' from the catalogue 'Ruby's Room: Photographic Miniatures by Bettina von Zwehl' (Holburne Museum, 2013)</image:caption>

<image:title>Meditations in an Emergency</image:title>
<image:caption>Meditations in an Emergency 2018-2023 The twelve young people featured in Meditations in an Emergency are symbolic of the thousands killed every year by what has become the leading cause of death for American kids: gun violence. The images have been selected from an extensive series of portraits that I made during a residency at the New-York Historical Society Museum in 2018, which represented teen activists staging ‘die-in protests’, calling for stronger gun control laws in the US. These protests - where participants lie on the ground to simulate being dead - are often employed by protest groups on a range of issues including: animal rights, anti-war, anti-trafficking, human rights, racism and environmental issues. After the Parkland, Florida shooting in 2018 students all over the country united in protest under the banner ‘March for Our Lives’. This grew into one of the biggest teen movements in American history since the Vietnam War - and served as inspiration for the series Meditations in an Emergency, in which I recruited teenagers from across New York City, asking them to mirror the protesters pose, in “a trenchant tribute to the victims of the school shooting on Valentine’s Day 2018, as well as a testament to endurance and the practice of protest and teen activism.” The first iteration of the project was exhibited at the New-York Historical Society Museum, and was inspired by the Museum’s collection of American portrait miniatures; however, in subsequent years, I have revisited the project on a number of occasions - perhaps by way of expanding the expressive range of the original negatives, but also a way of honouring the subjects, and acknowledging that the protests are still very much alive, ongoing and more urgent than ever. The latest presentation of the project features 12 individual portraits, each one handprinted twice and presented vertically, one above the other, in reference to Warhol’s ‘Ambulance Disaster’ series and Jasper John’s ‘Two Flags’. Each piece has been titled to reflect the creativity, passion and articulacy of the young protestors, who held hand-made placards that read, for example: “Laws Not Prayers”; “Make Murder More Difficult” or “I WANT TO READ BOOKS NOT EULOGIES”. The doubling of the portraits encourages the viewer to look more closely – to literally think twice. Moreover, it suggests the relentless multiplicity of issues that young people are faced with and care about, where one crisis is part of the other, and all social ills are interconnected. Doubling in the context of gun violence and youth activism reflects the dilemma of a singular narrative and a singular image. There is more than one emergency. Meditations in an Emergency extends an invitation to reflect on human vulnerability and the growing power of youth-led movements who are fighting for a better world. It also highlights the role that artists and museums play in keeping the momentum going.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Comprised largely of photographic works, von Zwehl’s exhibition is both an analysis and celebration of Ambras’ encyclopaedic holdings as well as the Wunderkammer form itself. In keeping with the diverse nature of its collection, von Zwehl has included multiple bodies of her own work, which, although relating to specific collections, sites and time periods, function as coherent strands within this conceptual framework." <image:title>Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Oxford</image:title>
<image:caption>For my exhibition The Flood, I am reimagining the lost and dispersed zoological specimens that were once part of the Ashmolean's founding collections. Through this exploration, I aim to spark conversations around our complex relationships with animals, conservation, extinction, climate grief, and activism. As an artist working in collaboration with museums, I bring my vision, imagination, and personal history into the dialogue. My practice is intuitive, challenging the expectations and display conventions of the institution. In contrast to traditional museum practices, I strive to create an experience where objects are not confined by labels, but are instead seen in a new, unfamiliar light. It’s a space where things collide—sparking a sense of wonder and opening new pathways for interpretation. In engaging with museum spaces, especially with young audiences, I focus on creating a nonlinear flow of questions, rather than linear narratives. Through these unexpected encounters, I seek to blur boundaries—across categories, cultures, and time—merging science and art with the unknown. It’s about strategically mixing objects and ideas to generate fresh conversations between historical artifacts and contemporary concerns. My time at the Ashmolean has deepened my appreciation for the power of Wunderkammer (or 'cabinet of wonders') display strategies, which I incorporate into my own work. Through close collaboration with curators and technicians and other artist, I’ve adapted this radical historical model to create an installation that is both associative and interdisciplinary—encouraging viewers to connect dots in unexpected ways. Museum objects have their own energy and stories to tell. Unlocking this potential requires time, patience, and a willingness to explore the undefined space between them. I feel a deep responsibility to amplify voices and stories that have been silenced or overlooked, challenging the conventional narratives and ensuring that the dust does not settle around the stories we’ve been told.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The New-York Historical Society’s first artist-in-residence, Bettina von Zwehl, presents new works inspired by the Museum’s collection of American portrait miniatures—particularly the profile drawings by Benjamin Tappan (1773 – 1857)—and by news coverage of a teen die-in staged shortly after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Von Zwehl has created 17 portraits of New York City teenagers in the historical form of the silhouetted profile, describing them as death masks sculpted from life. The conflation forms a trenchant tribute to the victims of the school shooting on Valentine’s Day, 2018, as well as a testament to endurance and the practice of protest and teen activism.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Installation view (Screen detail): Meditations in an Emergency, 2018; New-York Historical Society Museum and Library. As the New-York Historical Society’s first artist-in-residence, the London-based photographer Bettina von Zwehl gathered 17 students from New York City High Schools to pose for anonymous silhouettes. The series, titled Meditations in an Emergency, loosely represent the victims of the 14 February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland, Florida. Yet the positions of the students’ bodies in the photos also recall the “die-in” protests held by student activists calling for stronger gun control laws in the US. To reinforce this, outside of the exhibition on the museum’s second floor, there is a slideshow of activists holding signs with phrases such as: “Enough is Enough”. “It was really important to balance the idea of a memorial with the force of that teen movement,” von Zwehl says. “And to leave the view of some sense of hope at the end.” While the form is inspired by portraits of anonymous Americans in the New-York Historical Society’s archives by the 19th-century artist Benjamin Tappan, the series largely came out of von Zwehl’s disillusionment with the zealous culture surrounding gun ownership. The series title is taken from reports by teachers in America declaring a state of emergency after the Parkland shooting as well as a book of poetry by Frank O’Hara. <image:title>The Sessions</image:title>
<image:caption>The Sessions (2015-2016), is a set of fifty framed fragments of the same profile of the same six-year old girl. Individually tearing and shaping each piece of photographic paper, I exposed and developed the images on the fragments to both reveal and obscure partial views of her subject. The Sessions collectively refers to the length of a psychoanalytic session and the time I spent taking the young girl’s portrait, as well as the many sessions in the darkroom as I sought the essence of both image and subject. The Sessions, was made in response to a five-months residency at the Freud Museum in London and my reflections on the life and legacy of Anna Freud - interwoven with my own personal experience of undergoing psychoanalysis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Made during a 2014 residency at the Freud Museum, London, ‘Make a note of anything’ is a permanent site-specific installation. Made in collaboration with pupils at Holy Trinity Primary School in Hampstead to realise the work, which was created specially for the Anna Freud Room at the Freud Museum. A frieze in 268 parts, Von Zwehl photographed over 100 children’s eyes, which were installed in the formation of a frieze that runs unbroken around the room, just below the ceiling. The eyes are punctuated by more abstracted images; sections of blurred green foliage; glimpses beyond the room and out into the garden. The elevated height of the frieze repositions the child into the role of the observer rather than the observed, and in this way, the intense, uncompromising gaze of the children metaphorically ‘bear witness’ to what passes below them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"Immersed in shadow, faces turned away or concealed, the women seem intensely aware of soliciting the very gaze they evade ... Physiognomy, comportment, feelings are all revealed not through light but through darkness; shadows give us access to elements of the self that no light could reach. No doubt the flowing contours of the sculpted head, exposed neck and curved bust, caressed by a nocturnal light that seems to emanate imperceptibly from within, amplify the erotic charge of these pictures. But this charge feels to me to have more to do with the desire they arouse and even, impossibly, gratify – to see the other not in her presence but in her absence. You might have expected the darkness to drain the blood from these figures, to render them abstract, thin, insubstantial. Instead it endows them with a fleshly reality more palpable and more present than any flashgun or ceiling light could hope to achieve. These Laments are exposures, to be sure. They reveal the human as a lamenting being, destined to live with loss and absence ... Reminding us, in silent defiance of our culture’s tyrannising transparency, that the truest exposure keeps us hidden." - Josh Cohen, Extract from the Essay 'Invitation to Frequent the Shadows', included in 'Lament' (Art/Books, 2016)</image:caption>

<image:title>Early work</image:title>
<image:caption>“For over a decade I have been researching the human profile and the hierarchic approach to portraiture that was applied during the Italian Renaissance. There is an uncanny quality to viewing a person in profile, related to what remains invisible and untold. This method of representation may have a cold, rigid aspect, with no indication of the subject’s true character or emotion. To me it is one of the most powerful ways of representing a person.”—Bettina von Zwehl Left to right: Revival, Group Show, NMWA, Washington DC, 2017 Installation of Bettina von Zwehl’s Profiles III and Bettina von Zwehl’s The Sessions; </image:caption>

<image:caption>"Profiles III, 2005-2006 are reminiscent of Italian Renaissance portrait paintings and focus on the minute detail of the faces of six boys and girls all approximately 1 year old. These monumental profiles were displayed at St Mary’s as part of the Art in Focus exhibition programme to coincide with the launch of Imperial Health Charity’s Birth Centre Appeal and have now found their permanent home in the Birth Centre at Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital." @Imperial Health Charity</image:caption>
